A rejected code feels like the offer is dead, but nine times out of ten the code is fine and something about the cart is quietly blocking it. Almost every failure traces back to one of five causes, and they're quick to rule out in order. Work through them top to bottom before you give up on a code.

The five things to check, in order

1. Minimum spend. Many codes need the cart to reach a set amount. If you're a few dollars short, add a staple or a pair of socks and try again.
2. Excluded items. Plenty of codes apply to full-price pieces only and skip sale or clearance items. Pull the reduced item out and re-apply.
3. App-only or category limits. Some codes work only in the app, or only on a specific category like hoodies or loungewear. Check the fine print on the card.
4. Expired or capped. Every code expires and some have redemption limits. Glance at the last-verified time before assuming it should still work.
5. A copy-paste slip. A stray space or wrong capitalisation is the sneakiest culprit. Re-copy the code cleanly and paste it fresh.

If it still won't apply

Once you've cleared all five and the code still refuses, it's probably genuinely expired — which is your cue to switch tactics rather than keep retrying. A no-code deal often saves just as much: free shipping over the threshold, a two-for bundle, or a sale-rail piece. On the app, an app-only code or an in-cart gift may step in where a web code failed.

Why order matters too

Sometimes a code applies and then seems to vanish. That's usually a sequencing problem, not a dead code: a dollar-off discount pulled the cart back under the free-shipping threshold, so the fee returned and swallowed the saving. Build the cart above the threshold first, then apply the code, and watch the total after each step so you catch any slip immediately.

The habit that prevents most of this

Before you paste anything, read the two or three words of small print on the card — ‘full price only,’ ‘app only,’ a minimum spend. Those quiet conditions cause the majority of rejections people blame on a broken code.
